In Spite Of the Gods the Rise of Modern India Book Review Essay In â€Å"Spite of the Gods the Rise of Modern India† was written by author Edward Luce. Edward Luce is a British reporter who reported for the Financial Times from 2001 to 2006 for South Asian countries. He is married to an Indian woman, Priya Basu. Edward Luce went to school in London so he has a British education that is compared to the education received in India. The book â€Å"In Spite of the Gods the Rise of Modern India† is a very elaborate book that shows all the sides of Indian culture and life. The book shows in detail the economic system and status and the caste system that is used in India. He writes about India in great depth exposing corruption in the government system. He also shows that India is a rival to the United States. Edward Luce states that India is the largest democracy and has real elections in the country. Even though India is a democracy and has real elections there is an also a lot of corruption in India. The corruption is a stress that holds India back greatly from becoming a dominant world power. The economy of India still thrives enough to be an economic rival to the United States and china. Even though India is thriving Luce writes that India’s 1.1 billion people only 35 million have formal jobs that are enough to pay taxes. Even with this burden India still has a successful economy and can compete with other large countries. Luce states â€Å"India has a highly complex economy. Its complex steel plants are helping put their Japanese and American counterparts out of business† (pg. 55). In the book Edward Luce discusses the castes systems and explains the differences and conflicts of this system. Edward Luce discusses how the caste systems are separated by the â€Å"dharma† or duty.† But it is the Dharma of caste that perhaps gives us the best insight into how India’s traditional society saw itself† (pg. 105). In India like most other countries the upper classes are the wealthy and educated people. On difference in India than most other countries is the literacy rate all caste have a high literacy rate. Edward Luce covers all of the aspects of life in India in great detail. He has a very neutral view on all issues in his writing and only covers the truth about India. Edward Luce did such a good job by interviewing the people of India all classes from the upper class and the more common people of India. Luce then states that India is a growing country and will become very successful if it overcomes corruption and poverty. I feel like I have such a better understanding of this complex country after reviewing his book.

9.11 Cover-ups :: September 11th 911 9/11

As it is known on September 11th of 2001, the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and building 7 were affected by terrorist attacks, or were they? The Twin Towers were both collapse so was the building 7 which was located next to the north and south tower. The Pentagon was just struck on one side of it but didn’t do as much damage. Over 3,000 innocent people were intentionally killed, thousands of solders were killed and other thousands were injured. To start off small, the skyscraper known as building 7 was not hit by an airplane, it was made up of steel and was only 47 stories high. It is said that that it collapsed at 5:30 pm. In the videos shown, on a website called ReOpen911.org, shows as well as many other videos that the building collapsed in a form on which a building would be like in a controlled demolition. There were also no fires what so ever. The lease holder of the World Trade Center (WTC) Larry Silverstein said in a video himself that he ordered The New York fire de partment to â€Å"pull it†. This term means that they must destroy the building with explosives. The south tower collapsed in only one hour of burning and the north collapsed in two hours of burning. This is strange because the towers were well build, actually they were the best build towers known to man a tower in the Meridian Plaza in Philadelphia was burning for almost nineteen hours and didn’t collapse. It all seems suspicious. They say maybe the jet fuel was the thing that made it collapse but they also said the plane tank was practically empty. The smoke also indicates that it was carbon based fumes and couldn’t reach the temperature any higher then 1,800 degrees ferinheight, and steel melts at over two thousand degrees ferinheight. The clean up crew of the WTC found melted steels in the basement of the towers. There is an explosive that is well known to melt steel easily and it’s called C4. Then to top it off, all the evidence that was very importa nt was illegally destroyed. The investigators did no research on the items of the building. One weird thing happened to very little money was put into the investigation of the WTC which was only $600,000 and the investigation of Clinton’s affair cost $40 million.

My classroom methods would mostly resemble a traditional classroom in that there is a certain base of knowledge that students should learn before they can move on. I agree with the essentialist theory because I think that there is much to be learned from the classical material. It has stood the test of time and much of today’s society is based around it. Literature Review The Debate There are a million adults who cannot read, one in six Londoners is functionally illiterate and people who cannot read or write are excluded from opportunities and may eventually become alienated and turn to crime (Johnson 2010, cited by Gross 2010). Gross (2010) expresses her concern and believes it is not where the children live, it is how they were taught to read and how they were properly motivated to learn to read. She endorses the synthetic systematic phonics approach as opposed to that of the whole word approach and believes we must place our focus on reading as it is indispensable. Phonics advocates have been arguing that in order for children to learn to read, they need to have an explicit instruction in the rules of printed text in order to read properly. The phonics approach has been described as â€Å"bottom up† as it teaches the children to decode text and then the meaning and understanding will follow while the whole word approach is described as â€Å"top down,† as the children depend on the pictures within the book, form hypothesis and make predictions of the words with the text of the book being read (Wren, 2003). It was almost five in the afternoon, and he was fixing his hair inside his bathroom. Filled with cool lights and amazing music, the place was a blast. Then, Rex and his friends came across one booth that looked old, dark and abandoned. Curiosity got he best of Rex and his friends and they went inside the booth, expecting to see old and dusty things. Instead, they saw a round table covered in purple cloth, and on top of it was a crystal ball. His friends started circling the table, examining it and the crystal ball, and Rex decided to follow. All of a sudden, an old woman appeared out of nowhere giving everyone a shock. Unlike her looks, the old ladys voice was elegant, graceful. â€Å"What can I do for you handsome young men? Perhaps a look into your future, a chance to discover what sort of fate awaits you? † the old lady said. Everyone was looking and listening to the ld lady intently. But, as Rex leaned in to take a closer look at the ball, images started o form. â€Å"l see a woman, on her left is a lion, above her is an eagle, and on her right is a snake. † As soon as these words escaped Rex’s mouth, the images blended together and morphed into one. â€Å"Uh, ma’m, I think your orb’s messed up. † said Rex. At the apartment, Rex’s dad was worried. It was already eleven in the evening and Rex hadn’t answered his phone. Suddenly, his dad felt a discomfort in his chest. He knew that it had something to do with his heart because he could no longer breathe properly. As Rex’s dad was struggling to breathe, he uttered â€Å"Rex, where are you? † Later that evening, Rex picked up his phone. It was his mom.
